Participation in 大孩子老師偏鄉課輔營 is a great opportunity to see school life in Taiwan, improve communication and language skills, as well as learn more about Taiwanese culture, making yourself and others more open-minded as a people.

Staying at Da-Keng Elementary School for three days and working here as a teacher for third grade students was not a long period of time, but for me it was a wonderful chance to experience a lot new, meet new people, see Taiwanese daily school life for kids, improve my communication skills while living together with people whose first language is not the same as mine and who come from different cultural background than I do, as well as practice my Chinese with them. It was a challenge and an amazing experience at the same time, because surroundings and environment here is much different from the place that I come from, country called Latvia, which is placed in North - East Europe. First day I would describe as adaptation day for me - I tried to get used to the place I have to stay for next days (which I did pretty fast), meet all the other volunteers and, of course, do my best at teaching children of this elementary school. Since my Chinese is not good enough to teach in it, my main responsibility was to teach English vocabulary. My student seemed satisfied with it and as I noticed, he did learn quiet a lot new words. Besides teaching as it is used to, I tried to teach all of the students English by singing and dancing, and all of them seemed happy and excited about it. In the second day we had classes without any fun activities or games, but in my opinion it did not make this day much less interesting. We taught them mathematics, English and reading (Chinese). According to what my student has said, he felt very happy and enjoyed his day. Third day is the last one for me here, and during English class we learned new words again and reviewed the ones we learned the day before. I noticed that my student had made big progress in reading numbers in English and remembering them, as well as he succeeded in learning new words. Generally I would describe him as a quiet, but definitely inquisitive, smart, responsible and hard-working child who wholeheartedly liked to learn and know something new, who is good at mathematics and keen on learning English. As a positive aspect I can mention the way how we all spent time together between classes. Every break all kids always went outside and played different games such as baseball, badminton and others, and they were even more happy about the fact that teachers-volunteers joined them. It was a good way how to make our relations better and become good friends. I can surely and truly say that I enjoyed volunteering at Da-Keng Elementary School in Taichung, Taiwan, and it is absolutely wonderful way how to spend summer vacation - by helping others, making new friends, challenging yourself with something new, enjoying time with others and doing work that takes such an important place in making our youth, our youngest generation better - being a teacher. I definitely recommend other young people to participate in this program, because it is certainly worth it.

I taught others a lot of things this week, but they taught me even more.

I grew significantly in many different aspects here at this program. First, I have learned to interact with kids. I am not known for having patience, and I would personally admit to be annoyed easily by little kids. However, here, I was able to train myself to be patient and friendly. I found joy in helping others grow and interacting with smaller kids. Moreover, I have become a better teacher.  I have learned to understand students’ struggles and problems in order to help them. I have learned to see through others’ perspectives and think like them. I have learned to be more selfless. I have grown more mature in that I was able to take care of myself for more than a week. Washing my own clothes and dishes is a new accomplishment for myself. My favorite experience, however, was the people I got to meet. The bonds among the volunteers are very unique and memorable. Through the last few days, the different personalities have influenced me in many ways. This volunteer program is important because it helps the younger generation of our community. The future is the new generation, and we need to take care of them and guide them. This program offers these kids education and companionship. I have noticed that many kids here have their own quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. The student-teachers are important in that we must teach them to appreciate their unique quirks, maintain their strengths, and understand and improve on their weaknesses. We are here to help them grow. This program also benefits us, the older generation. It teaches us how to help others, trains us to understand others, and helps us mature as well. This program is important in that it helps us all open our perspectives.
